Spain Hotels

Most of Spain is well covered by both bus and rail networks and for journeys between major towns there's often little to choose between them in cost or speed. On shorter or less obvious routes buses tend to be quicker and will also normally take you closer to your destination; some train stations are several kilometres from the town or village they serve and you've no guarantee of a connecting bus. We've listed approximate journey times and frequencies in the "Travel details" sections, and local peculiarities are also pointed out in the guide. Car rental may also be worth considering, with costs among the lowest in Europe. If your trip to Spain is part of a wider European tour, then it may be worth investing in a rail pass, such as the InterRail ticket

Best of France

Rousseau wrote in his Confessions , "I need torrents, rocks, pine trees, dark forests, mountains, rugged paths to go up and down, precipices at my elbow to give me a good fright", and he certainly found what he was looking for in the Alps . Formed by the collision of two continental plates two hundred million years ago, the range contains some of France's most dramatic landscapes, with roads, rail lines and population confined to the deep valley floors. To get the best out of this region you have to walk - or in winter, ski. There are four national or regional parks in this section of the website - Vanoise, Écrins, Queyras and Vercors - all with round-the-park trails, requiring one to two weeks' walking. The Tour of Mont Blanc path is of similar length. Then there are two transalpine routes: the Route des Grandes Alpes , which crosses all the major massifs from St-Gingolph on Lake Geneva to Nice, and Le Balcon des Alpes , a gentler, village-to-village itinerary through the western foothills.

LINCOLNVILLE FESTIVAL WILL CELEBRATE OLDEST CITY’S AFRICAN-AMERICAN HERITAGE

The African-American heritage of the Nation’s oldest city will be celebrated with music, food and fun when the Lincolnville Festival returns to St. Augustine’s Historic Lincolnville on November 2-4, 2007. The festival gets underway on Friday with live R&B music, food, arts and crafts. Saturday features narrated tours of Historic Lincolnville sites, live country/pop, jazz and dance music throughout the day and a special “Soul Food” contest. On Sunday, the day’s entertainment features great gospel music – along with more food and more fun.
Funds raised from the festival will go to the Fort Mose Historical Society -- an organization dedicated to re-vitalizing Lincolnville and preserving Fort Mose. In 1738, the Spanish Governor of Florida Chartered Fort Mose as a settlement for freed Africans who had fled slavery in the British Carolinas. The only requirements for freedom for the Africans were to convert to Catholicism and to form a militia to protect St. Augustine, which they did. Consequently, Fort Mose is the first free African-American settlement in what is now known as the United States. The story of Fort Mose represents a story of courage, determination, and perseverance. The stories of Africans fleeing to freedom and of Native Americans who aided them, as well as tales of the many other people touched by Fort Mose will inspire everyone who visits the new Fort Mose Historical Interactive Museum scheduled to open in 2008.

Historic Lincolnville is one of the oldest African-American communities in the United States with more than half of its buildings dating from the late 19th century. Held on Washington Street in historic Lincolnville, admission to the Festival is free. Festival hours are Friday, 3 to10 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 10 p.m.; and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, call Derek B. Hankerson at 904.540.1636.

The Lincolnville Festival is funded in part by a grant from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council. For more information on events and vacation opportunities in

The Majestic Yangtze River

Situated in the heart of China, the Yangtze River is the longest in the world. The river winds almost 4000 miles through the country from west to east. The best way to discover China’s heartland is to travel along the scenic Yangtze River, passing through picturesque natural scenery and experiencing ancient Chinese history.

The Yangtze starts at about 16,000 feet above sea level on the Gelandandong Mountain in the Tibetan highlands. Though melting glaciers start the Yangtze as a small trickling stream, many tributaries cause it to gain volume very quickly. At Chongqing, three larger rivers meet the Yangtze, which then flows eastward through the famous Three Gorges and fertile Sichuan Basin. Not until Yichang, a town 27 miles east of the Three Gorges Dam site, does the river widen and slow down. Hotels

LILBURN, Georgia Swaminarayan Mandir

Spectacular architecture, the temple is built from marble, limestone and sandstone and are designed to last more than 1,000 years. Their stones interlock; no nails, screws or other metal that one day could corrode are used in construction. For this structure, more than 34,000 stones — including more than 2,000 hand-carved figurines — were shipped from India. The heaviest weighed 8 tons (7.3 metric tons). Upon their arrival, volunteers spent 17 months fashioning the stone into a temple that regularly will host a congregation of about 500.

"It's an amazing jigsaw puzzle,"
