Going to Louisiana just to EAT
There are lots of reasons to travel about. When you are anywhere near southern Louisiana, the reason could easily be to EAT. The crawfish are IN and – are they great! We had a layover planned for the Lake Charles area, but found better vacancies in nearby Sulphur, Louisiana. Sometimes things happen for a reason. In reading about the “nearbys” to our Hampton Inn, we learned they had a Cajun “kitchen” restaurant right next door. What a treat! Days before our arrival we were planning our Cajun feast.
Upon arriving in Sulphur, and before checking-in at the Hampton Inn, we stopped first at the next-door Cajun restaurant to get a copy of their menu, but found they closed early on Mondays. Drat. Not to be deterred and now on a serious mission, we took a short ride and located Hollier’s Cajun Kitchen at 1709 Ruth – just down the street from the highway exit and our hotel. Sometimes things happen for a reason.
What a great feast! After thoroughly enjoying ourselves with a sumptuous dinner, I decided we had to have some photos of the place and the seemingly endless mountains of steaming crawfish. Just when I was snapping my first shot, Wayne Hollier caught me and invited me back into the kitchen with him so he could show me the real show (as he put it). Take a look at these few photos Hot crawfish!
All during our dinner we had noticed a steady parade of people filing into Hollier’s. Sometimes the three dining rooms were full and a line was formed streaming in the front door to wait for a vacant table. It was clear there were some real pros at eating crawfish in this town and they took it seriously! I asked Wayne if it was typical that they were so busy during crawfish season on Monday nights. He said “sure thing, but Friday & Saturdays are even busier” – when they cook up over 60 bags of crawfish just those 2 nights!
Yum.
