The land used for Arlington National Cemetery has a long history that even predates the establishment of this military cemetery in 1864 near the end of the American Civil War. The United States Capitol has been the home of the nation's Congress since 1800, and its impressive cast-iron dome is an important symbol of the federal government that dominates vistas of the National Mall.
