National WWII Memorial Honors the Greatest Generation

The National WW II Memorial, which was opened to the public in 2004, honors the 16 million Americans who served in the United States armed forces during World War II, including the more than 400,000 troops who died in the conflict, as well as the millions of Americans who supported the war effort on the home front. In many ways, the WW II Memorial is a lasting tribute to the "Greatest Generation"

Like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the establishment of a National WW II memorial on the National Mall was not without some controversy. There were those who initially objected to building a large memorial on the open Mall, but once again the finished product won over even the most vocal opponents.

The Memorial is located on 17th Street between Constitution and Independence Avenues near the Rainbow Pool with the Washington Monument to the east and the Lincoln Memorial to the west. The National WWII Memorial has two large pavilions that represent both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war, plus 56 granite pillars representing each of the states and territories, so that everyone who participated in the U.S. war effort are honored as part of the National WWII Memorial.

The Smithsonian Institution More than Just a Museum

The Smithsonian Institution is more than just a museum; it is the world's largest museum and research complex. There are 19 museums and galleries and a National Zoo that are free to the public, plus nine research centers. Many of the most popular museums are located on the National Mall in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol building.

The National Museum of American History recently reopened on November 21 after being closed down for renovations. Displays at this enormously popular and very eclectic museum include Betsy Ross' flag, Julia Child's kitchen, Fonzie's jacket (of "Happy Days" fame), and formal gowns worn by America's First Ladies. Next door to the National Museum of American History is the more traditional National Museum of Natural History. Visitors will see the fossilized bones of a Tyrannosaurus rex and other dinosaurs, the priceless Hope Diamond, and an insect zoo.

Across the Mall and two blocks closer to the Capitol, the National Air and Space Museum is the most visited museum in the world. The most important milestones of flight are contained in this building: the original Wright brothers’ plane from 1903, the Spirit of St. Louis flown by Charles Lindbergh during the first transatlantic flight in 1927, and the Apollo 11 command module that transported the astronauts back to Earth from the first lunar landing in 1969. There are plenty of interactive exhibits throughout the Air and Space Museum, and there are so many artifacts that the museum has a second campus near Dulles airport in Virginia known as the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
Parking is extremely limited near the Mall; taking public transportation is highly recommended. For more information about the Smithsonian Institution visit http://www.si.edu/

Arlington National Cemetery Honors U.S. Military

The land used for Arlington National Cemetery has a long history that even predates the establishment of this military cemetery in 1864 near the end of the American Civil War. The Arlington Mansion that overlooks this site was started 1802 by George Washington’s adoptive grandson, George Washington Parke Custis, and by the middle of the nineteenth century it was the home of Robert E. Lee and his wife Mary. The Lees left Arlington Mansion after Robert E. Lee became a general in the Confederate army, and the land was eventually confiscated for the burial of Union soldiers by Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton.
Today, more than More than 300,000 people are buried at Arlington Cemetery. Veterans from all the nation's wars are buried in the cemetery, from the American Revolution (reinterred after 1900) through the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Two presidents are buried at Arlington—William Howard Taft and John F. Kennedy, whose gravesite is one of the most frequently visited. Kennedy’s wife Jackie and two of their children who died in infancy are buried together at the site.
Visitors often come to see the solemn changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns. The tomb contains the remains of unknown American soldiers from World War I, World War II, The Korean War, and until DNA testing made identification possible in 1998, the Vietnam War. U.S. Capitol Building Continues to Inspire

The United States Capitol has been the home of the nation's Congress since 1800, and its impressive cast-iron dome is an important symbol of the federal government that dominates vistas of the National Mall. The U.S. Capitol was burnt down by the British during the War of 1812, and restoration began in 1815. Throughout the 19th century, the Capitol building was expanded to accommodate the additional congressmen and senators that came with adding states to the Union.

One of the most impressive sights within the U.S. Capitol is the 180-ft. Rotunda, which was completed in 1865. Italian artist Constantino Brumidi painted “The Apotheosis of Washington” inside the Capitol dome, plus a number of frescos, bronze statues and paintings in other areas of the Capitol.

Visitors can take tours of the U.S. Capitol to get a better understanding of the building's architecture as well as the legislative process. When the Senate and House are in session, passes are necessary to watch the legislators in the chamber galleries.
For more information on visiting the U.S. Capitol, go to www.house.gov or www.senate.gov.

Millions of Visitors Drawn to Vietnam Veterans Memorial

The design of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is simple yet profound--two triangularly positioned walls of black granite inscribed with the names of every American soldier who died in the Vietnam War, listed in chronological order from the first casualty in 1959 to the last in 1975. At the time the memorial was completed in 1982 controversy swirled around the memorial's abstract design, which is only a short walk away from the classically inspired Lincoln Memorial on the National Mall, along Constitution Avenue between 21st and 23rd Streets.Since the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was completed, however, millions of friends, family members, and surviving Vietnam vets from across the country have come to Washington DC to pay their respects to their fallen comrades. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial reminds visitors of the ultimate sacrifice made by the soldiers memorialized on these granite walls, as well as the lasting impact their deaths have had on the loved ones they left behind. It is impossible not to be moved by the sight of visitors making a pencil rubbing of their loved ones’ names. Family members and fellow Vietnam vets often leave behind photographs, flowers, and even combat boots as a tribute to soldiers who are gone but not forgotten.A book of names on “the Wall,” as it is often called, can be found near the memorial to help visitors locate the names of their loved ones. A full listing of names is also available at The Wall USA

Mount Vernon Brings History to Life

Mount Vernon is a short day trip from Washington DC in Fairfax County, Virginia. The recently renovated visitor's center and the grounds of this country estate are filled with fascinating historical artifacts, giving visitors a glimpse at what life was like for George Washington and other gentlemen farmers in colonial America.
George Washington's father originally built Mount Vernon as a farmhouse and the estate is furnished as it would have been during Washington's presidency (1789 - 1797). The nation's first president called Mount Vernon home for 45 years, so the mansion and the surrounding farmland bear the imprint of Washington's legacy.

The 500 acre estate (which was originally 8,000 acres in Washington's time) offers mansion tours that are best suited for adults and older children who don't mind waiting in line to view historic architecture and furnishings. The circular pioneer barn and gardens help recreate the atmosphere of an 18th century farm, as do the sparse living quarters for Washington's slaves, who were freed upon his death in 1799.

When big events are happening in Washington DC, like the upcoming presidential inauguration, the downtown hotels fill up fast. Some of the hotels closest to the White House include the JW Marriott Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, the Willard InterContinental Washington, and the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, the largest luxury hotel in Washington DC.

The Lincoln Memorial A Symbol of Civil Rights

The Lincoln Memorial is a special place. Located directly across the Mall from the U.S. Capitol building, visitors can take in the grandeur of Washington D.C. while reflecting upon the sacrifices of the nation's 16th president, who fought to preserve the United States as one union. Visitors who climb the steps of the Lincoln Memorial are greeted by the solemn, seated figure of Abraham Lincoln etched in marble. The north and south walls have inscriptions of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address.
The Lincoln Memorial is operated by the National Park Service, and rangers are available to answer questions, give talks, and provide information. There is a bookstore on the chamber level and a small elevator takes guests to a lower level room where they can see exhibits on the Civil War era that defined Lincoln's presidency, the construction of the Memorial itself (construction began in 1914 and was completed in 1922), and the role that the Lincoln Memorial played during the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.

Library of Congress The World’s Largest Book Collection

With an extensive collection spanning the centuries, the Library of Congress has the world's largest collection of books and special materials. The main building of the Library of Congress, known as the Jefferson Building, was completed in 1897, although the very first reference library for Congress dates back to 1800 in a room in the U.S. Capitol. The Capitol can be seen clearly from the steps of this Italian Renaissance style building, and walking into the Library of Congress itself is very much like stepping into a museum. Downstairs, visitors will find a rare Gutenberg Bible sealed in a temperature-controlled glass case; it is one of only three perfect vellum copies in the entire world.Tours are conducted on a regular basis, which helps visitors get a better understanding of the artwork in the main reading room. The room is ornately decorated with eight marble columns, 10-foot high mosaics of classical female figures, and a domed ceiling. The main reading room's upper balcony is sealed off by clear Plexiglas, for safety reasons as well as a means for allowing researchers to conduct their work without distractions. Visitors can have access to the reading rooms after completing a registration form and presenting a photo ID.

The White House Home to the First Family

In many ways, the White House belongs to the people of the United States; new residents move in every four to eight years, and U.S. voters determine who gets to live here. Although guided tours of the White House are free of charge, visitors must get tickets through a member of Congress or an embassy due to the necessary security restrictions of the past decade. The tour itself includes a look at many of the rooms where First Families have entertained heads of state and other dignitaries over the years, however, the West Wing and Oval Office are off limits.
If you don't have a visitor's pass and are driving past the White House at the street level, the 200 year old building appears a bit inaccessible behind the concrete barricades; in many ways the best view of the White House is from the top of the Washington Monument. There is a White House Visitor's Center that sells books and other memorabilia at the southeast corner of 15th and E Streets, just a short walk from the actual residence at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. The store also sells the annual White House Christmas ornaments, which are specially commissioned each year. The closest Metrorail stations to the White House are Federal Triangle (blue and orange lines), Metro Center (blue, orange, and red lines) and McPherson Square (blue and orange lines).
